Ive had it(spear gun problems)Mini carbine
I have had it with JBL mini carbine. first day i got this gun has been nothing but bad luck. i paid extra to get it rush priority shipped to the place i was staying at in Florida. it came a week late, too late to hunt with. then when i actually used it,(in Minnesota) the tip came off. so i complained to JBL and they made it too complicated to send back for a simple tip that should have had a warning to put pipe tape or thread lock.
anyways. first trip lost tip. then i was goofing off with it, and nearly injured myself(but i wont go into details admitting to this) Finlay with new tip, (TODAY) i cant penetrate anything. was shooting over and over and over again at carp and suckers and all it will do is take scales off. i think i need to modify it to a double band to do any good...i like the size its easy to load and fits in the back of my car.

Re: Ive had it(spear gun problems)Mini carbine
if you want to make that gun work... if you've got a standard jbl tip (great big flopper locker ring w/rubber tits and twice as thick as the shaft is, it won't go through jello... throw the tip away, grind a point with 3 flat lands (not a round point like a pencil) on the end of the shaft, drill a hole an inch or so back from the end and add a flopper. that mini has about no range, but a shaft with flopper will make a big difference.. and so will using 150# or 200# mono.

Re: Ive had it(spear gun problems)Mini carbine
I bought a JBL 38 special this winter and have not used it yet. Will that have enough power without modification? If not, I would prefer to put the flutes on the JBL tip. Thoughts?

Re: Ive had it(spear gun problems)Mini carbine
even if it's the triple band special.. I'd throw away the stock tip, either mod the shaft by sharpening it and adding a single flopper or see if you can find a good streamlined screw on tip w/ single flopper. It's tough to find screw ons that are near the same shaft size diameter but that's what you should get. Obviously you shouldn't be trying to put it through bluegils (at least in minnesota that's illegal, they say the bluegils are protected but I realize their scales just don't protect them very well), but if you're trying to push though the armor of big carp or buffalo fish, I'd get rid of the jbl double flopper worthless tip for sure, and consider going to a monofilament tether instead of the nylong cord.
I don't know what this tip has for threads.. but something like this would be 100 times better: or.. here's what a flopper and rivet looks like.. then you sharpen your own shaft.. this takes some metal work but it's doable. Fred

Re: Ive had it(spear gun problems)Mini carbine
probably depends on what you are doing. that gun stock should have enough power for a starter gun. I don't know if your new to the sport, but if so you would benefit from some target practicing both for getting a feel with how the gun works, and loading etc. many of the spots i frequent are low vis, and the shots are less than ideal. actually tough shots are probably more interesting. Ive got one spot it is like a cave(on river) with a ledge you have a tiny hole you can see into a small cavern like area that has slow water...with fish siting in it. when you swim up and look in Ive seen eyeballs looking back. kinda cool spot. been tempted just to shoot Thur that glory hole but that would be too easy. plus you should know the species your aiming at before harvesting.

Re: Ive had it(spear gun problems)Mini carbine
OH, good web links Fred...
i like the design. i am a tad afraid that the first is too thin for shooting around solid bedrock areas. i have had problem with overpowered gun smashing the shafts bent to the point of no-use. as to the adding of just the flopper, that is what i should have done!.. some of my shafts are plated and not stainless. in this case it would be cheep enough to get one of the flopper's off of what they use for mounting screw hangers in sheetrock, and use that for the flopper. I have had problems drilling shaft. had to start the hole by heating,/hammering a slight flat depression, then drill Thur. broke several tips before got the hole made. hopefully no heat weakening of the metal. not sure if that was best route.??????
