If you could only dive 1 "destination" in the "whole world" for the rest of your
OK Here is the new question. If you could only dive 1 "Destination" in the "whole world" for the rest of your life where would it be and why? This is for fun. Please do some research before you reply. You don't have to make it a destination you have visited. Make it your "Dream Destination". If money were no object.
I hope to see a lot of varied, unique, and thoughtful responses. Thanks in advance for your response's to this post. Myron |

I guess I'd have to say Truk Lagoon though I've never been there it sounds like some pretty fantastic diving and I really like wreck dives.

Re: If you could only dive 1 "destination" in the "whole world" for the rest of
I heard that there is a movie called "The Bucket List". I have not seen it but I guess its about a couple of oldsters that have written down all the things that they want to do before they die and they put them in a bucket.
I guess If I had a bucket list of dive sites world wide I would just have Cuba written on a single piece of paper in the bottom of that bucket. They say that there are more Spanish era wrecks there per square mile than anywhere else in the world. I have heard that even Castro has a private island just off Cuba where he has two pristine galleons in a lagoon where only his personal divers have access to them. I heard that every once in a while he sends divers down to get some treasure just so he can look at it and hold it. I have also read that just in Havana Harbor alone there are over 200 anchors. Now I have about 13 years to work before I retire and Fidel and his brother will surely be dead by that time. If some other dictator doesn't jump in to power, there will be millions of dollars to be made in the tourist trade alone not to mention the treasure. I think it could be the next Hawaii as far as tourism and the next Atocha or Black Swan as far as treasure goes. Cuba would be the dive site that I could spent the rest of my days. |

Mr. decterguy, you are right. Before I read your post, I would have gone to Chuuk, just like Lonnie said. However I have been to Chuuk. As you talk about Cuba, thats the place. Cigars, pristine beaches and wrecks. The bummer is, none of them are virgin. In our eyes they are. To the rest of the diving world, they are not.
That has to be changed. I have been tired of no Cuban cigars for years. Really, why do we still boycott CUBA??? |

Re: If you could only dive 1 "destination" in the "whole world" for the rest of
There are two companies that I know of that are allowed to dive in Cuba that I know of. One is a company backed by a bank in Canada and the other is from Africa. These companies are hardcore and are using Mini subs, towed magnetometers, sonar, and ROV's. There is still a conflict of interest with this trio. Anything they find they need to split with Cuba. I am sure that both of these two companies are holding on to secret "sweet spots" so that eventually they won't need to share with Cuba. Kinda sounds like modern day piracy. If you really think about the circumstances in Cuba there has to be virgin wrecks... Cuba has been boycotted by the US and Nato countries since the early 1960's. This is when Diving was just learning how to get off the ground. Communist Cuba did not have the financial resources to explore their own waters nor did the the average Jose'. They did, and still do, have divers that are active "recreational divers" but they got a late start and the numbers of recreational divers are limited. The Cuban Navy patrol boats (even though they are limited in number) patrol the waters around Cuba and keep the locals from prospering. Even with the possibility of "no virgin wrecks" the real treasure in Cuba is the real estate. Location, Location, Location... 90 miles from Key West... a small lot on the North shore of Cuba could be sold to Walmart for a pretty penny. The trouble with this Cuban real estate is that the Cuban refugee's that have flooded to Miami are probably going to swim back to Cuba in hopes of reclaiming the land that Fidel took from them. If a person was to take advantage of a boycott being lifted, you would need to have the resources ready in a days notice because by day two the land will be gone and there will be new multi millionaires in Cuba. |

Yo' John....Guantanamo....AKA Gitmo. There are only two forms of recreation to our military personnel, one is drinking....
Just be careful in your navagation. One wrong turn under water and you get shot at when you surface!
My name is Lisa and I'm a SCUBAholic. It's been toooo long since my last dive!
