I wasn’t going to be the one to bring it up, but I spent 8 Hours in the Senate Gallery listening to the debate. I talked with my Senator and have spoke with many Senators and Representatives of this state over this issue.

This is probably the best written carry bill in the US. The thing most seem to forget is that the criminal are already around you with weapons. Now the law abiding citizens have another option to protect LIFE. It always amazed me that security guards could carry weapons to protect money but my wife or I didn't have the same option to protect each other or our child.

Even if nobody were to carry a weapon, the criminals now need to think about what could happen to them it they are intent on committing a crime.

If anybody want to know more about this or has any questions fell free to send me a PM and I can help you!

igotofar,
I'm with you. At the risk of opening up a great debate here. My State has one of if not the lowest crime rate per capita and has one of the most lax right to carry laws in the nation. I called the ND bureau of Investigation awhile back to see how many carry permits were issued..and this is maybe 10 years ago, at that time over 6000 permits had been issued. The gal on the phone at NDBI was saying a lot of the permits were issued to law enforcement so they could carry concealed off duty (she thought I needed consoling or reasons). ND population is 600,000 and that means about 1 in every 100 people could be carring. You think that doesn't deter crime? You bet it does. We've had a right to carry law for maybe 20 years. I was number 6 in the state about 20 years ago to get the permit (at that time they were numbered 001,002,003, etc.) and bragging to my shooting cronies at a weekend shoot, but had to shutup when one of them showed me he was number 003. I remember the police in Fargo were trying to set it up like a "get a divers license" and test once a month.. they were really dragging their feet. The old "give us your name, we'll call you back". I found an NRA instructor to give the test and the local sherrif signed off and I had the permit. Several of my shooting buddies had been there the day before me. The Rats!
I don't have any qualms about any law abiding citizen carrying but I expect that citizen to go out and really get familiar with what ever it is they are carrying. Join a club, go to the range, practice, practice. guess you learn something about me everyday?

Re:equipment redundancy...u think u're bad..
What do you guys do with the fourth grader who brings in a loaded handgun and threatens to kill the other kids on the playground if they tell?

When I taught in the inner-city of Milwaukee this is just what happened. The kids dad said that he took the gun from him and loaded it without his knowledge. Haivng said this the dad was let off the hook from any prosecution. I know darn well that the dad had the gun loaded when the kid took it and lied to cover his own butt. He should be brought up on charges and got away scott-free. >Sad

It scared the crap out me to think that kids who can't even tell time are allowed to run around with loaded guns and threaten anyone they want.

I now teach in a small town school where kids go out hunting with their dads, and moms, under controlled situations. They are learning to hunt in a safe manner with a rifle or shotgun. I have no probelms with this and think that any freetime they can spend with a parent is awesome. Big Grin

I do have a problem with all of the unchecked handguns running around out there wrecking havoc on innocent people.

Two months ago another one of my former students, who was a GOOD kid, was shot twice during a basketball game- with a handgun. He survived, but has a lot of rehab to go through before his life ever get's back to normal. :'(

I certainly don't want this to get into a pro/anti gun debate. I just want to make sure that you know there's always two sides to a story.

I understand that this debate has two sides. The fact still remains that criminals have weapons! Kids bring guns to school! Employees get angry - they get a gun and shoot up whatever! But, now when a criminal decides to "go out and have some fun" they will most likely attack a school where they know weapons are restricted. They will look for businesses that are posted as weapon free.

Kids aren't allowed to run around with guns! Criminals aren't allowed to run around with guns. SCUBA divers aren't allowed to dive without a dive flag. These things happen now!

Having a permit to carry doesn't allow you to play cop! It doesn't give you the right to shoot! If you are ever in the situation where you would have to soot, YOU WILL ALMOST CERTANILY BE ARRESTED AND CHARGED!!!

I have a 9 year old son who has been exposed to guns, he knows what they can do and has been taught what to do if he finds one. It isn't a toy to play with like on the movies!

Everybody wants the same thing, a safer place for our families and our kids, we just differ on how to get there.

Mind you, I'm not trying to stir up fire.. and I'll let the debate go on for awhile... as moderator, freediverND

As for the 4th grader, a good question.. it really was a lack of educating the child on the parents side, I hope the kid was reprimanded severely by the school and the parents. When I was on the farm with my 3 young daughters I had so many guns and ammo around that about as soon as they could hold one up they were taught firearm safety, they even had their own 22 that was available for their use and I'm sure they realized it was also there for their protection. My theory was that if it wasn't under lock and key, they would have no interest and if they had their own rifle then they wouldn't have an interest in mine. I know, had I grown up around guns that were under lock and key, I'da had 'um out all the time when I wasn't supposed too. On occassion they would take out their plinkin rifle but they really developed no curiosity about the guns.. they were just something that was there. Nowadays they're all pretty good shots, have shot in some leagues with me, and always have to explain their side of the story to their anti-gun friends who have never learned firearm safety, never shot, or maybe never even seen, a firearm.

quote from Jon:

What would be a checked handgun be as opposed to an unchecked handgun?

Quote:Two months ago another one of my former students, who was a GOOD kid, was shot twice during a basketball game- with a handgun. He survived, but has a lot of rehab to go through before his life ever get's back to normal.
Here in lies the biggest of the problems.. the guy that did the shooting, if caught.. will most likely do several months or possibly a year or two of prison time.. the key aught to be thrown a way. Not just criminals that use a gun but any person that commits a violent crime aught to be locked up for good. What the heck is this parole about... want to stop crime from happening, then punish the committers, discipline and word of discipline does travel, just like lack of punishment has the opposite effect.
Quote:I certainly don't want this to get into a pro/anti gun debate. I just want to make sure that you know there's always two sides to a story.
Same here, Jon, just want to mention about registering.. think of this, so many anti-gun groups want registration of weapons, and you know if the law was passed where us law abiding firearm enthusiasts had to run down to the local court house and register all our guns, we would... but do you think the criminal down the street will be in line with me to register his? I am one who is totally against any and all kinds of registration of ownership of firearms for that reason.

Igotoofar, I like the SCUBA reference.. good call (I only deleted about 1/8 of mine Wink)
