Re: New subject
An open water diver is like an empty tool box because....

He or she is a hollow shell that (at first glance) looks like he or she is ready to go to work. But really he or she lacks the tools (skills) to perform most tasks. The open water certification is like a learners permit to a new driver. Yes, you know the basics but that is it. The additional training (both formal and through experience) is the tools that will fill that "empty tool box".

Next question?

Hey Grumpie, I'm not sure what calendar you are using, but Leap Year was '08.....

A new diver is like an empty tool box because he doesn't have the stuff inside to keep from being crushed by bad experiences.

A full tool box can be run over by a truck and withstand the load!

A properly packed semi or panel truck can be rolled over without damaging the load because what's in it supports it.

A well trained diver with good quality gear that has been recently inspected has the tools and the knowledge to get out of a jam safely and/or avoid the mishap all together!

The knowledge gained from the classes like AOW, Rescue Diver, Emergency First Response, DiveMaster and such....Help to mentally train you to know what potential emergencies could be, and avoid them.  As well as to respond to the ones that happen and save lives!  Especially when the life on the line is your own!  Physical conditioning is not a bad idea either....
My name is Lisa and I'm a SCUBAholic. It's been toooo long since my last dive!

Re: New subject
So like one of them cheap $6 tool boxes or the Master Mechanic Role cabs from Snap-on with a top box. I mean, if it's going to be empty, let's look good people.

Ask your doctor if getting off your ass is right for you.

Re: New subject
Well an empty toolbox is useless much like an open water diver in the winter in Minnesota.

both are also useless if filled with faulty tools
