Re: Shore Diving Superior
Jason and I were going to try that this past September. The other accesses in the area (Madeira, Hesper, Gooseberry, etc.) had pretty rough wave action so I figured that little bay near the parking lot at Split Rock would be sheltered from the waves more. I was wrong, the waves were slamming in there pretty good as well so we passed. I'd guess that area is pretty shallow but I am curious what it's like underwater there.

Re: Shore Diving Superior
I had a buddy diver in Florida Keys that was from Wis. and he told me he dove there and found 7 coins in an area about 100 feet wide.  He thought it was from people throwing "good Luck" coins in there.Â
Its probably worth a day of diving after tourist season. Also, I think I will work on the sign idea a bit. I'm going up to Duluth on Thurs thru Fri. I will talk to some of the people up there about it. GREAT IDEA.... thanks. maxfactor |

Re: Shore Diving Superior
I've been there over a dozen times. It's called Little Two Harbors. The bottom is about 20', rocks near shore and sandy in the center. There is a crib dock on the SW side of the harbor where the America used to dock for a logging camp with pieces of the Madeira left over from a salvage operation to the South of it. The top of the dock is about 5' deep. On the lake side (SE) of the island is a pinnacle that comes shallower than 35'.

Re: Shore Diving Superior
So the semi protected bay area is about 20' deep and if you hop over the little rock out crop that connects to the island and dive in the open lake there is a pinnicale?

Re: Shore Diving Superior
What about the pull off areas or the monument areas along the north shore has anyone dove from them (not even sure if there is access to the lake from any of them), I know some of them closer to duluth you can get to the lake like the pump house area. Im curious for areas north of two harbors those could turn out to be easy/easily convertible spots for shore dive access to the lake!

Re: Shore Diving Superior
Ya know, I like the idea of having diver down signs. Also, Google Earth Community would be helpful too!

Re: Shore Diving Superior
Try the Lester River mouth. It has lots of fisherman so be careful, its pretty shallow but there are tons and tons of fishing poles, lures, watches, knives, etc. It is kind of fun to swim around and see what all one can find but be careful of the fisherman and boats.
Another good place is the a small lake above Tischer Creek just down the way from UMD, its pretty clear, with lots of fish, and tends to be an ok 2nd choice to dive when superior gets angry. |
