Canton Pit in Biwabik.
We tried Canton Pit today in Biwabik.  The access dropped of pretty fast.  Vis at first was nothing to write home about, but as we went deeper the vis improved greatly.  All data I had on this pit said it maxed out at 100'.  At a 150' we thought 100' my a**.  Smile  There are some very nice walls to be had here and I am looking forward to exploring this pit in the future.

There is also another access that Is possible to get to that is on the south shore, which is the lift station, (the white spot on the map)

Interesting.  What were the roads like leading into the pit?

Re: Canton Pit in Biwabik.
The roads are a little narrow and not taken care of, we were able to get a Ford Escort back there.  There are a couple spots that are iffy, but not too bad.  Also, there is a spot that a gate is blocking the road, but 4 wheelers have made a path around it.

The gear up area at the spot that we dove could actually fit quite a few vehicles.  The lift station access looks like only a couple could fit there.

I'm game for trying this one.  We'll have to get up there again this fall.

Did the vis clear as you went deep?

Yes, at depth it was very nice.  I would think that earlier in the year this pit would have some very good vis at all depths.

We tried to get back there this spring, but it looked like ATV trails to me.  Maybe we'll try it again this fall.

Ore be Gone viz on Saturday was not good above 60 feet or so.  It was great around 80 to 115, but very little light got through the silty layer, plus it was heavily overcast and drizzling out...

I like number even if it's a guess. Would it be fair to say "very nice" equates to 30 or more like 40? (I've never seen anything in MN better then 40 so we'll call that unlimited. Smile )

Re: Canton Pit in Biwabik.
FMT, Lonnie and JLeech dove Canton today.  The vis wasn't that great above 45', below was better in most spots.  Since this pit is still very new to divers, we dove to the south on the first dive.  The wall starts immediatley at the entry spot, convenient for getting good depth right away, nothing too interesting beside the big wall.

The second dive we dove to the north, again the wall was the attraction, besides an old wooden ladder we found at about 55' where we turned our dive.  We did find another ledge that could possibly get a little deeper than our 150' hole we found.  we'll have to find out another day.
Hopefully the vis will improve by the next time we dive it.

We also dove Lake Mine to raise the bouy on the buildings.  All in all a good day of diving.
