First river dive scheduled for April 15 between Detroit Lakes and Fergus Falls.......
More fish in 1 spot than you can see in a minnesota lake in 3 dives. If anyone is interested, let me know and I'll post more......I used an extra ten pounds of lead last year.......Still had to hug a big rock to stay in place.......but the fish are incredible......
Non-divers seem so, well, shallow.

I agree with "billtodive" the rivers are the first. the Vltava river in CZ is totally open and ready to go. It looked like 4-6 ft of vis.

Square Lake has about 18 inches of ice according to an ice fisherman I talked with when I was out there on Saturday, March 18th. I also saw a Bald Eagle soaring overhead. Darn, where was my camera...
But I just wanted to get my annual permit so I can go out an dive all spring, summer and fall!!! Can't wait to get wet!

I rode my motorcycle out to Square Lake today to check out the ice. It looks like there is 4-6" of "bad" ice still covering about 99% of the lake. There was one lone ice fisherman getting the last chance in before meltout. I walked out about 3 feet from shore, but didn't desire to get wet just yet...

Square Lake is still 98% covered by about 6+ inches of ice. There is about 20 ft of openwater along the shoreline.
I went out thinking that since the city lakes had iced out, Square would be close. No such luck. I did put the dry suit on and test the thickness of the ice. I cleared a channel out to waist deep water by sitting on the ice. Still pretty thick at 6-8 inches. Maybe next week... Jeff Leech

Oh, so you're the one! We were out there this afternoon and noted the blocks of ice opened up a little way out in the scuba area. My husband was asking about the platforms and what all goes on in the open water check out dives, how far out you have to walk til it gets deeper, how mucky is the bottom, etc. I'm so proud/glad that he's caught the bug too.
