Re: Ontario shipwrecks in Lake Superior?
We've done a few dives around Thunder Bay and to the northeast. Here's what I remember:
Terrace Bay You can launch the boat at the public marina just down from the Aguasabon Falls. It can be a bit squirrely if there's a lot of water flowing. The Rappahannock in Jack Fish Bay is worth the boat ride. We've usually had windy conditions there though. There's supposed to be a whaleback somewhere east of there (about 20mi from Terrace Bay, I think); one of the locals said it would be easier to get to the whaleback from Marathon instead of Terrace Bay. Nipigon / Red Rock The Neebing is out there somewhere, but we couldn't actually see it -- visibility was less than 2', as predicted by some local divers we met in Thunder Bay ("da visibility ain't so good dere, eh?"). There's a big river or two that empties out into that bay -- I checked Google Earth and it's pretty obvious, in hindsight. The paper mill at Red Rock is painfully stinky. Silver Islet There's technically a boat launch there, but if your boat is bigger than a canoe it's best to launch from Thunder Bay. No wrecks in this area but there is a submerged silver mine. Thunder Bay (This isn't really answering your question, but this area is more usable during bad winds that prevent getting onto the lake itself.) There's the Howard, Grey Oak, Green River (very cool and HUGE), and Monkshaven (broken up in the shallows). The Fryer is up against the shore of one of the islands so we haven't tried it. Talking with locals is a great way to get more info, especially since the Kohl book was (as mentioned) a bit inaccurate. Wally Peterson at Thunder Country Diving in Thunder Bay has been very helpful. It really helps to be towing a boat that acts as diver bait, too. We haven't been east of Terrace Bay yet, but there's supposed to be all kinds of stuff in Tobermory. Has anyone been there? |
