Freediving the Rum River on 8-25-2013
Nate and I went freediving in the Rum River yesterday. The first place we went was South of the bridge in St Francis, but the visibility there wasn't good enough when combined with the strong current and entanglements. The viz was about 4' but the current was strong coming off the shallows into the deeper pools. There are pilings there for the original bridge with lots of debris against them. Then we went to Isanti and snorkeled from Martins Landing down to Country Camping. This was a 2 1/2 mile piece of the Rum River that gets a lot of people tubing on it. Here we found a couple pair of sun glasses, a drumset for the Rock Band game, an old Viewmaster, some change, and a really old sunken wood boat. The boat was burried in the sand in an area about 5' deep. It was late afternoon so there were a lot of shadows from the trees that made it creepy at times. We couldn't tell if it was a shadow from a submerged tree strainer or a shadow from the trees above the surface. Even with no tanks it was a fun day.
