CANCUN Diver swims ashore after 10 hours at sea
Diver with over 600 logged dives and dozens of visits at the same site experienced strong current which pulled him more then a ½ mile away from dive boat, swims ashore after 10 hours at sea.
This is how we hope we all can react should this happen. Also.... take a look at two more safety items he could have had with him.  ANYONE CARE TO GUESS WHAT IT MIGHT BE. read more. maxfactor |

Re: CANCUN Diver swims ashore after 10 hours at sea
Hmm, I already have a safety sausage, and just received for Christmas a "Dive Alert" surface signal! And yes, that would be a good use for those AOL CDs that come in the mail!!
My name is Lisa and I'm a SCUBAholic. It's been toooo long since my last dive!

Re: CANCUN Diver swims ashore after 10 hours at sea
Alright Corncobb2
I confess, I have been a tad bit quiet lately. Sigh... So let's start the new year off right and get back into the swing of things...shall we? Am I suppose to comment (with wit) about the Cancun diver lost at sea Or the fact that DQ's safety sausage isn't coast guard approved, let alone, water proofed? Please advise. -And BTW- That's Chambers-Crowe to you pal. Anyone else feel like taking a crack? |

Re: CANCUN Diver swims ashore after 10 hours at sea
wtrm... you are correct on one of the additional safety items, CAN ANYBODY else guess what the others are?
Here is a hint 1 is a bit spendy and the other is an inexpensive one time use safety device that could have been deployed. WHAT ELSE COULD THIS DIVER HAVE HAD WITH HIM? maxfactor |

Re: CANCUN Diver swims ashore after 10 hours at sea
Mrs. arcFlash here...
I think an EPIRB [emergency position indicating radio beacon: so long as it didn't auto-activate upon getting wet!] or other type of ELT/PLB would have helped as searchers would have known where to look. They are a bit spendy but may obviously be worth the cost.
Ask your doctor if getting off your ass is right for you.

Re: CANCUN Diver swims ashore after 10 hours at sea
He had his bases covered pretty well with the signal sausage and the air horn. You can't carry the whole dive shop around with you. If there was a strong current they should have descended down the line. The mirror is a good idea, then I could check my hair before I get back on the boat. ;D
What did you have in mind Joe Joe? |

Re: CANCUN Diver swims ashore after 10 hours at sea
Get your own account, please. I'll vote for a mirror. I have a little one in my backpack/first aid kit. I spent $2 at Targets 'camping' section 5+ years ago. I think it's Colman and it has a lanyard hole and it's small but a 1/4 inch think safety glass.
