Re: Lake Calhoun
Good Evening, If you go off the north side and just a little to the west, you will find a lot of those holes. they get to be quite large.
If you go over to lake of the isles by 28 st. you will find more. I think ( ? ) that they are formed by springs, you can swim in to them and go down 5-6 feet and hit a wall and swim back up again. grumpie....... people will find the darnest place to end their lives. |

Re: Lake Calhoun
Just did Calhoun today, I may be saying what you might already know but I think the bottom temp is just 43F all the time. I dove the south end of the lake and the vis sucked since the lake is turning over. I did find a pretty interesting setup where their are some big rock walls with the funky holes in them. The rock walls go down about 6 feet then you have an area where it is flat or a ledge then another drop off that went down to 41 feet.
It was pretty cool to see this and would better if the viz was better. I guess I'll just wait until it gets a little colder. Surface temp 51F Bottom Temp 43F Vis, crap.

Re: Lake Calhoun
I did the lake today, not bad with vis around the 8 foot range. A little chilly and all you to do is fart and you will kick up the muck on the bottom.
Here is the log.Â

Re: Lake Calhoun
Was that the north beach?
49 feet! I don't think I found that water. it seamed to level off at 30-ish and it was smooth silt, looked like a moonscape.
Ask your doctor if getting off your ass is right for you.

Re: Lake Calhoun
No that was at the old South Beach. It is not really a beach but it is where all the Wind Surfers go in right next to the parking lot. It is pretty nice when the viz is above 5 feet since there is some valleys in there. At the top of the valleys it is sand but at the bottom, don't even think of going near it or you will have zero viz ASAP.
The South parking lot that I'm talking about is the one with the wood chips in it. If you go out about 20 feet, it drops from beach like to a 25 foot drop off pretty fast. It goes down to about 30 feet if you keep going to the north then it comes back up to about 20 feet and they you have a major drop off to 40-50 feet. I'm thinking about going again this weekend if my back losens up. I need to get my hover skills back up to par for my trip next month.

Re: Lake Calhoun
Ok, I dove "Lake Colan Blow" this evening. Viz we down to 4 feet at best above 10 feet and below 10 feet it was arms length at best.

Re: Lake Calhoun
Sorry to hear it was so bad! Last summer, Steffi and I dove Calhoun in mid-August with a soon-to-be diver following along on snorkel. Vis at that time was "a good 6 feet+-" Maybe the past few days of hot weather are triggering an algae bloom :
My name is Lisa and I'm a SCUBAholic. It's been toooo long since my last dive!

Re: Lake Calhoun
Hey Doug... Wasn't it Calhoun that we found the human head and the beer in last year?

Re: Lake Calhoun
I don't know about the head, it looked more like a doll or wig but I don't think it was a head. But it was the same place we found the beer that you wanted. After the eight days of diving in the Tortugas, Calhoun was like diving a sewage system.
