Dove Green Lake and Spectacle Lake today
I got two dives in on Green Lake today and one in Spectacle. Green lake had horrible viz (about a foot). I did end up finding a nice saw log on the bottom that was 9 feet long by 20" diameter. It was sawn at both ends and seems very solid. It had the angle cut on one end as it must have been the stump end. it was sitting in about 15' of water and about 1/3 mile from the location of an old (now removed) sawmill. What are the "rules" about harvesting submerged timber? The other dive was going to be an anchor dive but with the one foot viz I hooked my cave reel onto my anchor and searched in concentric circles with no luck.
The one dive on Spectacle Lake was kinda boring until I got home. I used the "lakefinder / DNR site to print a contour map of the lake. I was looking for this 51' deep hole that was shown on the map. I never found the 51' hole but a large area at 49'. It was a cold muddy moonscape for the most part. I went West from there and got into about 39' deep water and came across this 3' depressed area that was about 8' wide by 20' long. This whole area was bottomless silt and yet the vertical sides of this depressed area were almost straight up and down. Going to the NE from this pit there was a trough that tailed off toward the NE I followed it for a ways and then the trough blended into the rest of the bottom. When I got home my mom called to ask how my dives went (she always calls after I go diving to see how it went for some reason). I told her about the depressed area in Spectacle. She asked if it was in the West side of the lake and I told her it was. She told me that is where Dr. Hedenstroms sons airplane went down in the '60s. She told me to look it up in the Cambridge archives to get more info. She said the guy died and the plane was removed. Here are the coordinates to this "depressed area": N45 34.437 W93 24.618 |
