Shooter, With that info it makes perfect sense that it was mechanical failure. The one picture showing the stern of the boat shows about 6" of the broken driveshaft sticking out past the universal joint. Now this should be a splined shaft in front of the universal joint should slip in and out of the end of the crankshaft. I dont think there are any keepers holding these in. If the driveshaft broke first it would flail around and crunch the aluminum gimbal housing like the picture shows on the bottom. If the pivot pin on the lower unit broke first it might have slipped the splineed driveshaft out of the back of the engine but not guaranteed. Next time your hanging around under the ice try to pull the drive shaft out if its not rusted in yet...
