The north beach at Lake Calhoun has been closed temporarily because of a pollution alert, according to the Minneapolis Park Board.

The beach was closed Tuesday after routine tests found elevated levels of E. coli bacteria, which can cause intestinal illness.

No cases of illness have been reported, according to Sara Aplikowski, water resources coordinator. She said the beach will be reopened when E. coli levels drop to safe levels.

The north beach at Lake Calhoun reopened today, a day after a pollution alert forced its temporary closure, according to the Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board.

The beach was closed after routine tests on Monday found elevated levels of E. coli bacteria, which can cause intestinal illness.

Today, the park board reported the results of follow-up testing that showed the E. coli levels, which had exceeded federal guidelines, returned to safe levels as of Tuesday. No cases of illness have been reported, according to Sara Aplikowski, water resources coordinator.

Is there promising diving in Lake Calhoun when the polution limits aren't exceeded? Anything worth seeing or decent viz?

I actually have not done a dive in Calhoun but have heard that it generally has pretty good viz early and later in the dive season but lower viz in the summer much like all of the other local lakes we dive...(Perch, Square, etc.)

Calhoun is awesome (when E-coli is not present). Lots of structure and wall formations. Vis is better than square year. On Sun., we had about 10'. Make sure to bring a flag to avoid trouble.

Anything you need besides a flag? Are the park cops pretty testy with divers?

We have not had a problem with them this year and we are there at least once a week. If you find anything worth "keeping", you'll want to keep it on the down-low getting it to your car. I've heard the park police confiscate stuff peope find with metal detectors on the beach. ???
