Re:Public Safety Diving
The larger departments (IE Hennepin County) but when you get outside the metro there are not the larger teams, and this trains divers to a standard, and not all dive teams do that on their own. The class trains on the PROPER working of a dive team along with search, rescue, and recovery techniques. Yes, it does give you a certification. You would need to have Open Water as a prereq.

Re:Public Safety Diving
OK, now I'm confused... what's new... but do I need to be to be associated with a public safety agency? I'm not currently and don't foresee that I will be but I'd be interested in the course and volunteering my 'services' to a local PS team...

Also, I found the following information on TDI/SDI's website:

"New Revisions and Courses are leading the Public Safety Diver Industry
Emergency Response Diving International, part of the International Training family (SDI/TDI/ERDI), has released their newly revised public safety diving programs. In addition to revising and updating the existing courses, new leadership level courses have also been created. These new programs will give fire departments, police agencies and rescue squad's greater flexibility in how training is presented to their respective departments.
According to Paul Montgomery of ERDI's training department, "Our courses have been designed to be OSHA and NFPA compliant to ensure the safety of those public safety divers who are training to improve their skill level and serve their communities."
Montgomery, a former career firefighter, hinted that more innovative courses are yet to come. Said Montgomery, "As everyone knows, especially those in public safety, it's a different world in which we live compared to a few years ago. ERDI and International Training are at the forefront in giving the necessary tools to its facilities and members."
David Burroughs, National Sales Manager with International Training, has indicated that Paul will be presenting both an ERDI Training Update and two other ERDI informational presentations at DEMA 2004 in Houston this fall. "This will be the perfect opportunity for ERDI Instructors to prepare for teaching the new ERDI programs" Burroughs said.
To learn more about Emergency Response Diving International and its programs call International Training World Headquarters at 888-778-9073 or 1 207 729-4201. You can also send emails to worldhq@tdisdi.com."

The End.

Yes- you have to be associated by a public safety agency, but depending on where you live, if you talk to the local dive team and volunteer your services they may sponser you to go to this course. If you want you can e-mail me and let me know where you live and I can get you a number to contact.

Re: Public Safety Diving
I belong to the Kandiyohi County Dive Rescue Team and we can't even get our own members to go, so I am not surprised. I believe the cost is around $350/person.

I am not sure if they validate your membership on a dive team.
