New monofin!
This might be of interest only to Fred, but I did just get my new monofin and had to a chance to try it out in Devil's lake today.

I had a company in Estoina( Specialfins.com) make me a custom monofin with full-foot fin pockets on it, just like a real pair of freediving fins! I was able to wear it for over 2 1/2 hours without any pain at all. ;D THat's a big improvement over my old monofin, like the one Fred has, which would KILL my feet after only 20 minutes.

The blade is also angled which helps to improve my kick quite a bit. Actually, it's not so much a kick as an undulation.

I picked this comapny after my regular freedivng buddy, Ted, picked up a new pair of bi-fins from them. These are some of the best hand-crafted fins that I have ever seen!

People can argue all they want about how well they think their split fins work, but NOTHING can compare to a good freediving fin when it comes to moving through the water- especially against current. As a matter of fact, two top tech divers use freediving fins with their drysuits- Oliver Isler and Billy Deans. Plus, Tom Mount uses freediving fins for many of his warm water tech dives.

The company can also customize the fins with your name and any flag, or other logo ( for you dive stores out there), that you want.

Here's a shot of it.

Re:New monofin!
My old fin just doesn't compare to the new one. This one is so much more comfortable and gives more thrust than the old oe does. Plus, it has the right "angle of attack" when it comes to moving through the water for those of us without hyper-flexible ankles.

Size-wise they are very similar, however the foot pockets are VERY different. I can fit a 6 mm freediving sock into the foot pocket of my new monofin, something that never could have happened with my old one. THis means that my feet will be toasty warm all winter long.

Lastly, a shot in the lake.

Vis. was less than 10', but the water was a balmy 61 degrees. I couldn't find much depth past 30' today. The deepest spot in the whole lake is only 44' and I didn't feel like swiming to it today. Most of the good diving is done around the edges where the rocks tumble down to the bottom of the lake. This makes for some nice mini-walls that go straight down to 25'.
