Re: Crosby Mine Pits - Camping / Status?
I stayed at the Portsmouth Campground a couple times this summer, several campers had portable generators running during the evening, wasn't a problem.
I spoke with the "Caretaker" and he said that the "State" had been out earlier (mid July) and had inspected the electrical hookups, they had found that approximately 60% had been wired incorrectly, and he felt that the state was looking into bringing power back out to the camp sites. He wasn't sure about the bath house. I like staying there since I can take-off for a day of diving and feel pretty comfortable that when I return, all of my belongings will be just were I left them. The caretaker does patrol the campground on a regular basis. I have camped at Louise and left for a couple hours to dive another pit and when I returned, I have had items stolen from within my tent. Items like tanks, dive bags, fins, grills, coolers, you name it. This was back in 03'. Otherwise, nothing beats camping by the pits, but I will only do so when camping with multiple parties. Safety in numbers.
