Diving in Alaska

Has anyone had on the board ever dove in Alaska, near Anchorage area?  If so do you recommend a certain dive shop or dive site?  Is there any good shore diving?

I did some checking on it.  What I was told is if you go through a dive shop,  You have to hire a dive master or instructor to guide your dive. From the research I did there is a lot of good shore diving, depending on the time of year you are there.  I was going to go when the salmon were running and spear them. You can also spear some halibut, but you have to take a boat offshore and that would require a dive shop and an instructor, muy dineiro.

I would still like to dive there within the next three to five years....
