You don't have to register to see the Pioneer Press article:

Re:Zebra Mussels in Brainerd area
I am not an expert on this, but, it seems to me that these mussels need to be in water while being transported. Most dive gear dries out in a short time. Although, it may be possible they came in on dive gear, my guess is the livewell of a boat, a floating minnow bucket, bilge or anything else holding water on a boat.

Re:Zebra Mussels in Brainerd area
It seems people are getting a bit defensive here... who's accusing divers of contributing to the zebra mussel problem in Minnesota? In particular, the situation in Brainerd? Other than the introduction of Zebra mussels via European cargo ships in the 1980's, the only causes of spreading mentioned in the article: "...typically are spread by hitching rides in bait buckets, on boat hulls and motors, or on aquatic vegetation left on trailers."

Re:Zebra Mussels in Brainerd area
There was a post accusing divers of being the cause of the zebra mussel problem in Brainerd. That post has apparently been deleted by the original poster or by a moderator. The responses to that accusation should have been deleted as well so as not to cause confusion therefore, I have deleted my response to that post.
