Cozumel trip report
I write for an online magazine called Gear Patrol. They just published my trip report from Cozumel and I thought I'd share it here.
Hope you enjoy it! |

Re: Cozumel trip report
Nice article....lucky you, a black-tip reef shark...I was there Feb 21-28, and didn't see any sharks. I did see a few turtles and some spotted eagle rays, and two splendid toadfish on different dives. We were there for the last half of Carnaval...the evening parades were something else. I had a great time, it was my first time diving the tropics. But leaving 80F for 8F....that isn't much fun.
Glad you posted the link to your article. |

Re: Cozumel trip report
Thanks for the kind words... After looking at the one shaky photo I got of the shark, I am starting to think it was actually a bull shark. The bulkier shape of the body, the smaller dorsal fin and the lack of black tips leads me to think this now. I had trusted the assessment of our divemaster, but am having second thoughts now. Here's my crappy photo:

Re: Cozumel trip report
It's always a good day when sharks are part of the logbook entry. It looks to me like a reef shark, very similar to a blacktip but with the pale anal fin and dusky areas on edges of pectoral and ventral fins. The reef shark is the most common in the Caribbean. Great article.

Re: Cozumel trip report
Nice report, thanks for posting. I returned from Cozumel a week ago today. The weather was a bit overcast and cold for Cozumel, but it was still nice. I was a bit concerned for the reef - looked a little beat up compared to my previous trips. But the wild life was great! Especially during the night dives - I've never seen so many octopods, squid, and eels! Only saw two nurse sharks and one eagle ray, though. We did see toadfish, tiny seahorses, and an incredible amount of fish and other critters.
I've been to Cozumel in the December and February months, so I don't know if it is indicative of the economy or March, but the place was dead. Even the cattle boats lacked heads! If it wasn't for the cruise ships, town would have been dead as well. Stay out of the main square - it's nothing but the same shop selling the same junk. Although, I must admit, I purchased a 'Nacho Libre' wrestling mask for my brother... Unless you're at an 'all-inclusive' buy your food/drink from the grocery store or local Oxxo. A 12 oz. cervesa at the resort was 33 pesos plus tip, and an one ltr. cervesa was 28 pesos at the local store (with a returnable 6 pesos if you returned the bottle - 14 pesos / 1 dollar). Anyway, it's warming up here and I'm ready for another season of MN diving!
