World Championships - Freedive WI - 05-28-2003 I don't know if anyone besides Fred and I are paying attention to it, but the world Championships are going on in Cyprus right now. The main event is "Constant ballast". That means that you have to SWIM down and SWIM back to the surface without using any sleds or liftbags. Today Carlos Coste made it to 280' . Tomorrow Martin Stepanik and Herbert Nitch are going Head-to-head to see who will break the world record. They are both attempting dives to 305'. I had the good fortune to dive with Martin a couple fo years ago in Miami at the same time he broke the world record for "static breath hold". That means holding your breath in a swimming pool for as long as possible. He hit 8:03! Jon Re:World Championships - freedivernd - 05-28-2003 Jon, I just got done reading the update over at db.. amazing. That would be some event to watch. It would be fun to be a spotter. I was surprised by Kracks performance (he probably was too) but then anything can happen I guess. Fred Re:World Championships - Freedive WI - 05-29-2003 MARTIN IS THE MAN!!! ;D After Herbert Nitch blew out an ear drum on his attempt, Martin proceeded to make a clean 305' freedive! Martin is the best diver I have ever had the chance to dive with. Besides being a former finswimming champion from Europe he is also a certified commercial diver and makes his living diving in Miami. He now has had world records in three different areas. One of his most amazing dives happened in Hawaii last year. During the competition they set a depth limit of 240' for all competitors because they were concerned about the safety of the trimix divers. Martin had hurt his ankle and did the 240' dive wearing a little pair of rubber pool fins! The man is amazing! Jon |
