Portsmouth Campground - mcdiver - 08-23-2008 I am planning on going up to the Crosby/Ironton pits over the Labor Day weekend. I have never camped at Portsmouth since the state took-over. I like camping at Louise, but the darn kids that drive up and down those roads at break-neck speeds has really concerned me, plus I just do not feel safe leaving anything not locked in my truck. I have had people actually come inside my tent and steal dive gear. Is Portsmouth a big gathering place for divers and is there a big risk for gear being stolen? Re: Portsmouth Campground - Dano - 08-23-2008 The few times I have been there, its usually all divers and/or family. As far as risk goes, there's probably some, however, it may be less due to no thru traffic. Last weekend I saw the ranger pass thru 3-4 times in one day, if that helps any. Re: Portsmouth Campground - SCUBA Dog - 08-24-2008 There is always risk, but I have never had any problems while at the campground. The Ranger does drive through several times. FYI, they have closed the showers and there is no electric anymore. 99 Re: Portsmouth Campground - mcdiver - 08-24-2008 No showers and no electric? What a rip. I had camped their many times years ago when it was privately owned, it was a very nice place. Showers were always hot, restrooms were always clean, grass was always mowed. Thank you State of Minnesota, your tax dollars at work. :-[ Re: Portsmouth Campground - arcFlash - 08-24-2008 Hi Dave, I've spent at least 8 nights in that camp. I prefer it over camping to the back woods. Something needs to be done about the human waste and I'm not limiting that to all the poo... Anyway, I have never had even the smallest bit of trouble in that park. I'll agree that not having modern bathrooms is a drag. Water is available in the back of the building so it's something. Given it's proximity to the treatment ponds I don't drink it but after a good boil or dishes it's very handy. I may actually be up there for a night if I can get a spot. I don't know how to judge that place. I've never seen it full but that doesn't mean anything. If you still have my number from our Forest Lake dives give me a ring. I'm looking to kayak that weekend and that may be just the spot for an overnight and a dive or two. Steve Re: Portsmouth Campground - mcdiver - 08-24-2008 Hey Steve, Good to hear from you. You know, I may or may not have your number, I have a Steve listed in my cell, but no last name, so it might be yours (last 4 are 4689). I recently moved to Monticello and living with a friend, so "stuff" is still boxed and I am not sure where it may have ended up, but anyway, mine is attached to the bottom of these messages, so feel free to give me a call. I am planning on leaving for the campground around 10am on Friday so I should have no problem securing a campsite, assuming they do not accept reservations. If you decide to come to the campground, look for the white DodgeRam pickup with white topper. Feel free to pitch your tent next to mine whether I am there or not. I don't have to be back until Tuesday afternoon, so I plan/hope to stay their for four nights, that should give me time to get in at least 8-10 dives, depending on weather and how much BSing I do with others. Re: Portsmouth Campground - arcFlash - 08-25-2008 That's me. I'll run it by the wife and see if we can patch together a muli-sport or if I'll go up for the night by myself. |
