Underwater pumpkin carving story on NPR - Elkman - 10-31-2006

I heard a story on NPR's All Things Considered last night about an underwater pumpkin carving contest organized by the Mountain Sharks Dive Club in Missoula, MT.    They talked about how cold it was (41 degrees!) and mentioned the rules of the contest.  They also talked about the positive buoyancy of pumpkins and mentioned the winners.

Actually, I could relate to the story, since I participated in the pumpkin carving at Square Lake last weekend, organized by Going Under Dive Center.  It was a little warmer (47 degrees in the water, but windy as hell out of the water), and it was fun.  I think I managed to mess up the visibility a bit by getting pumpkin shavings floating in the water.  For my efforts, my pumpkin got second place, and I won a prize from GUDC.

I'll see if I can upload a picture or two.  I got a few pictures from my digital camera in its new underwater housing -- then the battery ran out.

.  I think GUDC was going to post all of their photos eventually, but I haven't seen them on their site yet.

Hi Elkman
Yes it was a little chilly and extremely windy but as you said it was a lot of fun.  I took 4th place and was really happy with that.  A big THANK YOU to GUDC for the great time and prizes and also the hot dogs and beans.
