lift bags - MNLakeDiver - 03-28-2005

I am thinking of buying a lift bag and reel this year. any suggestions on what to look for. size, style,
I may take a search/recover class this year also

I have a Halcyon Pathfinder 400 reel which I'm pretty happy with.  I haven't tried any other reels though to compare.  DiveRite, Halcyon and Carter make pretty good liftbags.  I think 40# to 60# of lift is a pretty good size to get unless you're looking at lifting some real big stuff.  Also, I like the semi-closed bags better than the closed ones.  Their just easier to use I think.

I was thinking around a 60# myself. what about one of the oms 50# tubes or are they just for markers?

The bigger tube style ones are actual lift bags and not just surface markers.

SubSalve Quad bag 50lb is a really nice bag, I have seen them at Smith Diving... I have a couple of them and have had great luck...

I bought a Carter 75# bag last year.  Very nice construction. But honestly I have not even gotten it wet yet.  I have it connected to a little halcyon spool.

I have a Halcyon 60# SC with a cold water Defender spool.  I played around with them at Wazee this weekend,  they both worked well,  the spool is pretty slick.

I carry a liftbag and real on almost every dive I make, you never know when you may need it.

I was diving in Lake Michigan a couple years ago and some divers had sterd the bottom up and made visability almost impossible. Needless to say, I could not find the "anchor line" to surface.

I shot my bag up and used my bag and reel for my safety stop. I drifted a little, but no big deal, the dive boat seen my bag surface and kept an eye on it as I drifted. They picked me up shortly after I surfaced.
