Pelican 1650 Case and Air Travel - FrankT - 09-28-2004

I am thinking about getting a Pelican 1650 for my dive gear, but have some concern about it being over the max size allowed by airlines.

Has anyone had any experience flying Sun Country, (or any other airline) using the Pelican 1650 Case and being charged for oversize baggage? The 1650 measures 64.3" instead of the 62" max, most airlines allow. From what I am hearing, it's the weight the airlines are more concerned with, and they let the extra 2" of size slide by.

There seems to be a lot of divers traveling with bags "just" over the 62" limit and not having any problems, as long as they stay under the weight limit.
