Temps are suppose to be quite balmy this weekend, anyone care to "blow some bubbles"?

Re: Ice Diving Anyone? - tullibee - 02-14-2008

I've been battling a nasty cold this week, so I'm not going ice diving this weekend.  (not making any predictions for next Sunday though - the day after the GLGSPS show might be a good day for an ice dive!)

PRM and I tried to put something together. We have everything but ropes, and optionally, a shelter. I can go but we'll need a bit of gear.

I'm looking at different types of rope but haven't found exactly what I want. I want a poly line with the handling of a kern mantel and the splicing ease of layed line.

Anyone care to opinionate, I'm considering this product.

If the weather is as predicted, we should see temps in the mid 20's, so a shelter may not be a high priority.

Ya, ropes were the hang up and now I'm in a loner car for the weekend. My 2008 Grand Caravan has been in the shop for a week. It blew a power steering hose and they can't find a replacement. My last van went 160K without one problem, this one 3600 miles.

Wow that sucks...
Being from that business in a dealership world as a service director...( past employment )...I would have taken one from a new one on the lot just to take care of my customer....You should think about asking...

Going diving tomorrow out at lake minntonka, got 8 tadpoles how are just jumping up and down to do some treasure diving, so they are going to clean up a docking area. We will bring a fema trailer down to dress in and such. we been diving twice a month since they got check out in sept. we should get lots of beer cans and cell phones. when do you do the mri?

Re: Ice Diving Anyone? - arcFlash - 02-16-2008

Grumpie, what kind of line does your PSD team use for ice? What safety factor is used?

The rope I'm considering is 1600 but that only comes out to 8 at the very most. If I use 5 it's less conservative (and it's inside of the 5-12) but allows for a very heavy diver. I don't know if that's a big enough margin. I'd be happy with 3000 but then I'm into double braid and might as well use my 8.5mm at something like 4250 and accept the 400-800# wet core loss.

I suppose it's also worth saying that these are dedicated water lines and should never see fall factors above .5 as I don't do swift water.

Re: Ice Diving Anyone? - grumpie - 02-17-2008

Im a little confused by your question. We use water rescue rope and Im not sure on the tensil strenght of it. I think that its about 2-3,000#. Our rope that we use for the divers has comm lines in it and its about  1/2 inch ID. and is 150 feet in lenght.
All our other rope is in drop bags and 200 lengths. we do have two back packs that have 600 feet of kerr-mantle line that we use for static line. we would use this for rigging across a creek and use a rubber duck for a diving platfrom.
I carry in my truck a 200 foot drop bag of 5/8 kerr-mantle
                          a 200 foot drop bag of 1/2 kerr-mantle
1 100 foot throw bag of 1/2 line
2 75  foot throw bags of 1/2 line
I use these for training, I also have several safety harness made by LGS that we use yor ice diving.
grumpie.....

Sorry about that. I guess I was hunting for a number that would give a safety margin without being ridiculous. 11mm static line can have ratings up to 11,000 pounds down to 5/16 Water Rescue at 1,600lb. You have to call it strong enough at some point.

I thought maybe PSD had numbers about ropes being X time the working load. Climbing was always 15 times the expected load but that's a different game.

I'll get the 5/16 double braid version. It's rated 4,000lb.

Thanks
