Aahhh..I said The Socrates......a roughly 800ft ocean freighter that beached in a storm..on Park Point in Duluth. the very location we are talking about here. I think it happend near the end of the shipping season in 1987( i think) I just remember that i was on my way to hockey practice at 5:00am at the DECC and there was this huge ship with waves crashing over the gunnels they were at least 18ft high when they hit the ship. it broke anchor and very heavily beached. if i recall, it was there for at least afull month. i know it took many tugs to get her off..but dont recal the exacts..i will see if i can find something on it......Basically, i was saying.....its a damn big lake...we should treat it so.

ok, it happened in 1985..the ship is now named the Mecta Sea. try this link the ship should come right up...this is the bad boy that i am talking about...it was like you could walk up and touch it when it was beached...
