Re: ice diving, how many years/dives? - DetectorGuy - 08-31-2012 I was reading my dive log books the other day, and I started tracking dates and dive #s for some milestone dives. This is how it shook out for me (so far): #Dive: Activity: Date: Notes: #1 Open Water Certification 5-20-07 NAUI #6 First solo dive 5-28-07 #16 First paid recovery 10-27-07 $90 for looking for a shotgun #17 First saltwater dive 2-11-08 Puerto Morelos MX #21 Drysuit Certification 3-30-08 NAUI #30 First Lake Superior dive 7-26-08 Madeira #37 2nd paid recovery 8-30-08 $220 for looking for a ring #57 Adv. Scuba Diver Certification 11-23-08 NAUI #59 AGA Full Face Mask training 1-8-09 No certification #64 Ice Diver Certification 1-24-09 PADI #70 First dispatched recovery 4-11-09 #79 Nitrox Certification 6-2-09 PADI #83 First time finding a car 6-20-09 5 cars found that day #94 First dive above 5,000' 7-18-09 Mt Rushmore #106 Rescue Diver Certification 8-30-09 PADI #161 Divemaster Certification 9-18-10 PADI #205 First spearfishing dive 9-16-11 90 miles off Florida #260 Most recent Dive 8-25-12 15 minutes from the house To date I have 260 dives, and 50 of them have been ice dives. Of the 50 ice dives, some have been better than others but all of them have been good. Not saying its a good thing, but I've done 75 solo dives (not counting being under the ice alone). It's not every ones cup of tea, but I like the solitude of ice diving and solo diving. If anyone is thinking about ice diving certification... don't put off the opportunity Re: ice diving, how many years/dives? - mcdiver - 09-05-2012 Trinity, Don't forget that Sunday we went diving at Lake Hariot, where the ice had already pulled away from shore some 50' or so. That Park Cop "wannna be" was eyeing you up pretty good, I think she wanted to take you home when she got off duty. That explains why you were in such a hurry to slip into the water. Hope you counted that dive. Re: ice diving, how many years/dives? - Terry - 09-05-2012 Ya that kind of thing happens to me, all the time. I counted that dive, Dave, that gal cop showed up because Young Joe walked out stretching the line on the ice to see how far 400' was that him and I ran out to get clear of the weeds. Locals called, that "people were out walking on the ice" when it had melted 50' from shore. The ice had turned black and porous. He tried knifing thru it from underneath, but without 15 min. to make some headway, there was no getting just your head thru. Heres a pic of Young Joe and I on "real ice" out on Prior Lake Re: ice diving, how many years/dives? - Gravybird - 09-05-2012 well it sure is getting closer ;D Hoping to get in a good few fall dives, than the ice dives ;D brrrrrrrrr Re: ice diving, how many years/dives? - mcdiver - 09-07-2012 Who's the old fart on the left? Re: ice diving, how many years/dives? - Dudley - 09-07-2012 Brrrrrr! Today it feels like Winter will be here quick! Enjoy some footage from last winter: Re: ice diving, how many years/dives? - Hydro - 09-07-2012 so my coil is out on my saw, and kelly has to take the crack when she sees terry's saw 1. its bigger (its the same size bar) 2. it works ;P Re: ice diving, how many years/dives? - Terry - 09-08-2012 Hey Yong Joe, What is the cc count on that saw of yours? Mines 95, you know its not just the length of your tool, but the power backing it up, that makes ALL the difference. Here's a couple pics I'm sure she'll enjoy, you give Kelly a kiss for me :-* Trinity Re: ice diving, how many years/dives? - Terry - 09-08-2012 Dave, do you mean on the right?,,,,,,, Thats the late Capt. Tony Terracino (of Jimmy Buffet tunes) and I at his bar in Key West, during Fantasy Fest. He's 87 in that pic, with 4 ex-wifes, a dozen kids, on oxygen, and still said, he had a couple messages for anyone, (but, especially for you!) who called him an, "old fart". Re: ice diving, how many years/dives? - mcdiver - 09-08-2012 Love the pics buddy. Man do I miss Minnesota. I will probably be here through July 2013, that's when the new product (sugarcane harvestor) goes into full production. So it looks like no ice diving this coming winter either, unless I can sneak away for a long weekend, but with air flights, car rental and motel, it's easy to spend upwards of $1,000. I seen your pic in Key West before, gotta love it. The big blade on that chainsaw is compensating for....... |
