Square Lake! - Irishalepunk - 05-01-2008 Just if anyone was interested how Square was today. Me and my buddy went out the Water temp was about 43 it was a blast though. we hit up Golden acres and we stopped at all the platforms and checked out the tail of the plane as well. it was a good dive bit chilly had to call it after 20 minutes. my dive buddy got a little cold but all in all the lakes are warming up and it was a awesome dive happy to get that first open water dive of the season in ! Re: Square Lake! - JBPearson - 05-15-2008 I have to share an experience I had at Square last weekend. My dive buddy and I both bought our equipment this spring so we were anxious to get out and try it. What better than a rainy spring day to do just that? The dive had been going OK. I had a couple gear adjustment breaks but vis was a little better than expected and the new wet suit was nice and warm. We were reaching the end of our air so I turned towards shore and started to surface. Looking back I didn't see my dive buddy and noticed our flag about 20 feet behind me on the surface. As I started a surface swim towards it a round black thing rose out of the water next to the flag. Only it wasn't my buddies head, it was a loon! A few seconds later my buddy surfaced just as it was diving. "Did you see the loon?", I asked. He hadn't but right then it surfaced about 10 feet from us and looked right at us. It dove and swam about 6 feet next to us and then surfaced about 10 feet on the other side. It repeated this 2 times and then I whistled in an attempt to "become one with the loon." It apparently didn't care for this because it dove, swam past us and didn't surface again until it was well away. Definitely the highlight of the dive and something I have never experienced before in my life. Made that LONG trip to Square from Richfield worth it I guess. ;D Re: Square Lake! - big thunder - 06-24-2008 Did a nice morning dive at Square this morning (6/24). Viz was about 8' water temps above the thermocline were in the mid sixties. Did almost 70 minutes. It was nice to get out. Big Thunder Re: Square Lake! - big thunder - 07-20-2008 Did a night dive at Square Lake Friday the 18th. We are on the platform that has the toilet on it with the telephone in the bowl when it dawned on me that I have never removed the tank cover to see if a diver/comedian had placed anything in there. I removed the cover shined my light in only to see about a foot long bullhead in there! I coaxed him out and replaced the cover. We later stopped back on the platform and lifted it up again and he was back in there, the tank has a chunk missing that he can squeeze through and the bullhead has chosen that as his home! Friday was a beautiful evening for a night dive! Thunder Re: Square Lake! - segundo3000gt - 07-20-2008 I dove there a month ago and saw the same bullhead. He must be living there. Re: Square Lake! - NZarathustra - 07-21-2008 It's a "she", I think, 'cos there are little baby bullheads in the tank too (at least there were last week). Re: Square Lake! - smurfette100 - 08-06-2008 Not sure if it's the same one, but we had one in there last year when we dove Square. Too funny!!! Re: Square Lake! - NorthlandDivers - 09-20-2008 We were out at Square Lake today on the Park side doing open water dives and the viz is the best I've seen in a long time. It had to have been at least 12'. Water temp was 66. Re: Square Lake! - NorthlandDivers - 09-22-2008 Did 2 more dives on Sunday with students. Viz was just as good as Saturday. We came face to face with a really good size Northern on Sunday. One of our Instructors got a couple of good pictures of it I think. I will ask him to post them if they turned out. Re: Square Lake! - NorthlandDivers - 10-11-2008 Did 2 open water dives at Square Lake Golden Acres today. What a beautiful day! Lake was like a mirror. Sun was shinning and we had at least 15' of visibility. It was a picture perfect day. Water temp was 57. |
